According to Reuters, on January 10, 2025, SAIC Motor, one of China’s largest automakers, and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), the world’s leading battery supplier, announced an expansion of their strategic partnership. The collaboration will focus on developing electric vehicles (EVs) with swappable batteries, introducing innovative battery leasing models, and supporting SAIC’s overseas market expansion with CATL’s extensive battery service network.
In this collaboration, SAIC will manufacture and sell EVs equipped with swappable batteries supplied by CATL. This approach enables customers to separate the cost of the vehicle from the battery, reducing the upfront cost of EV ownership. Additionally, CATL plans to establish an overseas after-sales service network and source components from nearby international production facilities, ensuring seamless support for SAIC’s global expansion.
CATL, which co-developed 10 new EV models with automakers last month, sees battery swapping as a key driver for expanding the EV market. The 1,000 swapping stations planned for 2025 will offer convenient and fast battery replacement services, reducing downtime for EV users. SAIC, known for its joint ventures with Volkswagen and General Motors, will leverage CATL’s expertise in battery technology to improve its domestic offerings and meet growing demand for advanced EV solutions.
