On January 17, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and Masdar, the United Arab Emirates’ leading clean energy developer, have announced a partnership to execute the world’s largest solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project. With an investment exceeding $6 billion, the project will combine 5.2 GW of photovoltaic (PV) solar capacity with 19 GWh of battery storage. This pioneering initiative will deliver 1 GW of continuous, round-the-clock clean power, setting a new global standard for sustainable energy solutions.
The EnerOne battery system, provided by CATL, integrates the latest liquid cooling technology, enhancing operational safety, reliability, and efficiency. The system is specifically designed to withstand extreme conditions, ensuring stable power delivery. This collaboration represents a milestone in renewable energy by creating the world’s first giga-scale, round-the-clock solar and energy storage project, capable of delivering uninterrupted clean energy 24/7.
CATL will supply its advanced TENER battery storage technology, known for its robust safety features, long lifecycle, and high integration capability. This system also incorporates enhanced protection and improved energy capacity, making it adaptable to extreme weather and diverse application scenarios. The project supports the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and climate action, aligning with Masdar’s mandate to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100 GW by 2030. Established in 2006, Masdar has been instrumental in advancing clean energy projects across more than 40 countries.
