According to Chemanalyst, Mitsubishi Chemical Group has announced plans to expand its production capacity for anode materials used in lithium-ion batteries, primarily for electric vehicles (EVs). The expansion will take place at the Group’s Kagawa Plant in Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture, with operations scheduled to commence in October 2026.The upgraded facility will boost annual production capacity to 11,000 tons, aiming to address surging global demand for EV batteries and support the transition toward sustainable, carbon-neutral mobility.
The newly developed anode material outperforms synthetic options, offering enhanced durability and extended battery life. Leveraging proprietary technology, the Group has developed a cutting-edge grade of natural graphite anode material that resolves swelling issues—a common challenge that reduces battery life while addressing industry challenges such as energy efficiency and sustainability.
Mitsubishi Chemical Group specializes in natural graphite anodes, which feature lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during manufacturing and superior lifecycle performance compared to synthetic alternatives. The Kagawa Plant will also produce advanced anode materials with reduced environmental impact, strengthening the lithium-ion battery supply chain and supporting the growing EV market.
