On December 26 South Korea’s HD Hyundai Infracore Co. announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province, Gunsan City, and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation. The company plans to invest $79.6 million to establish a new engine and battery pack plant in Gunsan by 2027. This plant will focus on producing solutions for defense, ultra-large-scale power generation, and new energy applications, aiming to supply advanced engines and battery technologies to global markets.
The new plant will span 62,700-square-meters and specialize in high-performance engines and battery packs. According to the plan, the new facility will be able to produce 120 defense engines annually for electric vehicles, 1,250 large power generation engines with a capacity of up to 3 megawatts, and 880 megawatt-hours of battery packs each year. This battery production capacity will be sufficient to power 3,000 electric buses annually.
Currently, HD Hyundai Infracore produces battery packs for Doosan Bobcat at its Incheon plant and provides battery solutions for Tata Daewoo’s electric truck projects. The establishment of the Gunsan plant will not only strengthen the company’s domestic operations but also enable it to meet international demand, such as exporting defense equipment in Poland and Turkey.
