Eramet has delivered its first production of lithium carbonate from its Centenario plant. Eramet Chairman and CEO Christel Bories emphasized that the launch of the Centenario plant marks a “significant milestone” in the company’s development, showcasing the application of advanced technologies while providing sustainable and efficient lithium resources for the global electric vehicle market. Notably, the plant was completed and operational within just three years, demonstrating the project’s highly efficient execution.
Eramet’s Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology played a critical role in the production process. Designed specifically for producing high-quality battery-grade lithium carbonate, this technology ensures efficient utilization of brine resources while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The Centenario-Ratones contains more than 15 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent, with an average lithium concentration in brine of 407 milligrams per liter and future annual production potential reaching 75,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent.
To strengthen its strategic control over lithium resources, Eramet announced on October 24th, 2024 that it had acquired a 49.9% stake from its Chinese partner Qingshan Holding Group for $699 million, achieving full ownership of its flagship lithium project in Argentina. Eramet executives stated that the Centenario project is highly attractive as an investment for its abundant resource reserves and advanced technological support.
