Reported by The Economic Times, the International Battery Company (IBC), a global manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, is set to commence production at its ‘Giga Factory Unit’ in Bengaluru within the next nine months. Announced by Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M. B. Patil, the project represents an investment of $46.8 million and is expected to generate 300 direct jobs. This pioneering initiative will position Karnataka as a hub for advanced battery manufacturing and contribute to India’s transition to renewable energy.
The Giga Factory, located on a 10-acre plot allocated by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) within the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), will focus on manufacturing lithium-ion cells and battery packs for small mobility solutions such as two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The first phase of investment will make this the first-ever facility in India to locally produce lithium-ion cells. Future plans include expanding production to support larger mobility applications and retrofit batteries, further enhancing Karnataka’s role in the green energy sector.
Minister Patil highlighted the global impact of the project, noting that 20% of production will be exported to the US and EU markets, showcasing Karnataka’s high-quality manufacturing capabilities. IBC’s existing operations in South Korea, where it produces lithium-ion cells, will be supplemented by the new Bengaluru unit, enabling the company to deliver fully assembled battery packs for Indian market. Patil commended IBC’s founders, trained in Silicon Valley, for their focus on designing batteries tailored to Indian conditions, ensuring high performance and reliability.
